17 April 1917 – Arrives in Gibraltar

DIARY: Tues. At sea and came in sight of African coast about 9am. The view of the rocky coast from the sea is splendid. Came in sight of Tarifa point half an hour later.  The southern part of Spain at this point is very remarkably rocky and mountainous.  Just behind Tarifa Point and inside the bay we came in sight of the massive rock of Gibraltar, which is a splendid sight.  Went inside the harbour and took in coal and water.  Arrived at 6pm after a voyage of 1000 miles. Saw Tangiers Coast.  Sent wireless message to Gib.

  1. It must have been a fantastic sight for James and having travelled a 1000 miles. In 1917 people just didn’t travel like that.
